Ham Loaf Balls

If you have never heard of ham loaf you are probably not from Indiana.  I remember these in church cookbooks, and my mom would make these from time to time.  You can also make this as a loaf too.

The best part is the glaze.  It has a sweet and sour taste and goes well with the ham loaf.  I haven't made these for years.  My mom would always serve these with cheesy potatoes. I think it's comfort food.

If you are local to my area, you can buy the hamloaf at Schulz Market or Shoup's Country Foods.  I like making these as an appetizer. They are just the right size for kids and grandkids too.  Plus when you make them in the Mini Muffin Tray they cook much faster.

Tools Used:

Perforated Baking Sheet, Mini Muffin Tray, Mini Whisk, Silicone Pastry Brush, Eco Chop

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Hamloaf

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 1/2 cup cracker crumbs

    Glaze

  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon mustard

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1/4 cup pineapple juice

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Place the Mini Muffin Tray on a Perforated Baking Sheet.

  2. Combine the ham loaf, onion, eggs, and cracker crumbs.  Mix lightly until combined.

  3. Using a cookie scoop, generously fill each well of the Mini Muffin Tray with the ham loaf mixture.

Glaze

  1. Heat ingredients to a simmer until the brown sugar is dissolved and remove from the heat.

  2. Brush the ham balls with the glaze.  Bake for 30-35 minutes and baste and additional time during baking.

  3. Remove from the oven and baste one more time.
